Chiropractic Adjustment: Eliminate Pain!

The chiropractic adjustment can also be called chiropractic manipulative therapy (CMT), manipulation,or mobilization. This is the main treatment provided by chiropractors, the goal is to restore optimum function in the joint through increasing motion or correcting a misalignment.

Sometimes but not all the time an audible "pop" can be heard coming from the joint. This is called a cavitation and there are many theories on why this sound occurs. Many different kinds of adjustments are out there ranging from high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) which is a short shallow impulse thrust to instrumentation used to provide the thrust.

There are also many kinds of instruments, the most common are the Activator and Pro-Adjustor instruments.

Neck (Cervical) Adjustment

For a neck adjustment the patient is sometimes laid down on a chiropractic table, either on their back or stomach. The chiropractor will hold the patient's neck while providing a short shallow thrust into the joint. Other chiropractors use a special chair to sit their patient's in for the adjustment. The patient being seated seems to provide a better biomechanical advantage for both patient and doctor.

Mid Back (Thoracic) Adjustment

With a mid back adjustment the chiropractor will either lay you on your back or stomach. When in position and the Doctor has found the area to work on they deliver the thrust.

Lower Back (Lumbo-Pelvic) Adjustment

A lumbar or pelvic subluxation will result in the patient lying on their side. The chiropractor will then get into position with a stabilizing hand usually on one of the arms and the other ready to deliver the treatment. The chiropractor will then use their body and drop straight through their treating hand providing the adjustment.

Chiropractic Adjustments can also be made to correct dysfunction in other joints such as the hip, knee, foot, wrist, elbow, shoulder, and ribs.
