Chiropractic Adjustments and Migraine Headache Relief:
Clinical observations suggest that migraines may be aggravated or potentially caused by cervical spine conditions. One proposed mechanism for how chiropractic treatment could influence migraine is through alteration of the pain sensitivity of the central nervous system.
In an article from the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics on manipulative therapy for migraines, it was found that there was a significant reduction in migraine episodes and associated disability.
The greatest area of improvement was medication use, where a significant number of participants recorded that their medication use had reduced to zero by the end of the 6-month trial.
There have now been several studies demonstrating significant improvement in headaches or migraines after chiropractic adjustments. Getting adjusted regularly has shown to greatly reduce headache episodes in the normal headache population as well.
Acupuncture and Migraine Headache Relief:
Acupuncture is another alternative method in helping to treat migraine headaches. In a 2006 article from Headache, certain acupuncture points including Gall Bladder 20,40, or 41 or 42, Du Mai-Governing Vessel 20, Liver 3, San Jiao 3 or 5, extrapoint Taiyang, and additional points based on Traditional Chinese syndrome diagnosis modalities were recommended by the physician in getting migraine headache relief.
This trial added to the growing body of evidence that acupuncture might be an effective and safe treatment option and could be a helpful tool for the interval treatment of migraines, particularly in patients unwilling or unable to use drug prophylaxis.
Several uncontrolled studies of the use of traditional Chinese acupuncture have reported substantial reduction in frequency and severity of migraine headaches. The principal points are GB-20 and ST-8. Assistant points include LI-4, LU-7, GV-24, and GV-20. Auxiliary points are GV-16, BL-10, BL-16, TW-1, GB-21, KI-1, XF-2, T’ai-yang, and GV-4. (29)
Massage and Migraine Headache Relief:
Most headaches, including migraines, are relieved or greatly reduced by massage of the cranium, cervical region, and facial structures. Shiatsu point pressure on the cranium can suppress even the worst pounding headache in minutes. One study of patients with chronic headache showed that massage produces analgesia accompanied by improvement in mood.
Anti-inflammatory Diet and Migraine Headache Relief:
Research now clearly demonstrates that our dietary habits can promote a state of chronic inflammation that leads to the expression of aches, pains, disability, and most chronic diseases. The Anti-inflammatory diet may give people relief who suffer from chronic headaches.
Certain foods can be pro-inflammatory and need to be cut out of our diets. There are many food triggers associated with migraines as well. This can be an option for any person suffering from chronic headaches especially migraines.
Nutritional support and Migraine Headache Relief: Magnesium
In the article on the efficacy of intravenous magnesium sulfate in the treatment of acute migraine attacks, it was found that magnesium deficiency has been proposed to play a role in the pathophysiology of migraine, and recently treatment of migraine with magnesium has gained considerable interest. In this study 1g of intravenous magnesium sulfate for the treatment of migraines was used in 30 patients with migraine attacks. The results showed that magnesium sulfate was an effective method of relieving migraine headaches.
In another 2002 article from Headache, it was found that in one small but double-blind and placebo controlled study that Magnesium supplementation was reported to be effective in the treatment of menstrual migraines. It was also found that 1 to 2 g of Magnesium sulfate administered intravenously was effective for headache reduction in approximately 90% of the cases.
In a 2004 article from Headache using the combination of riboflavin, magnesium, and feverfew for the treatment of migraines, it was found that these were the most commonly recommended supplements for the treatment of migraines.
It was stated that each of these compounds has a theoretical mechanism of effect on migraine, and has had at least one double-blind placebo-controlled trial that demonstrated efficacy.
The combination product providing a daily dose of riboflavin 400mg, magnesium 300mg, and feverfew 100mg, showed an effect comparable to that of a placebo, which contained 25 mg of riboflavin. It states that further trials will be necessary to resolve the role of these agents for migraine prophylaxis.
Other Nutritional Support:
Altered melatonin levels have been found in subjects with menstrual migraines. Melatonin may have an anti-inflammatory effect; it scavenges toxic free radicals, reduces the up-regulation of proinflammatory cytokines, and inhibits nitric oxide synthase activity and dopamine release.
In this study done on the effectiveness of Melatonin in migraine prevention, it was found that menstrual associated migraines decreased in frequency. In this small series of migraine patients, melatonin was effective in reducing the number of headache days per month. A controlled study may be worthwhile.
In a 2009 article from Med Sci Monit, a study was done on the effect of vitamin E on the treatment of menstrual migraines. In this study, vitamin E, as an antiprostaglandin agent and a drug with low side effects, effectively relieved headache pain and associated migraine symptoms.
It also reduced functional disability and the need for escape medications. It is suggested that further studies with large populations should be done to determine the efficacy of vitamin E in the treatment of women with menstrual migraines.
Riboflavin (B2) and omega-3 fatty acids were shown to improve migraine headaches. Including Niacin (B3), Pantothenic acid (B5), Vitamin B complex (B1,B6, and B12), and Pyridoxine (B6) are some recommended nutrients in your daily diet to help prevent migraine headaches.
