Motion Palpation and the Functional Model

Motion palpation (MP) is used by chiropractors across the world to find areas in the spine and extremities to treat and adjust. It was brought to the United States by a Doctor named Leonard Faye. Dr. Faye studied under the founder of MP, Dr. Henri Gillet. Dr. Faye is also the author of the recent text Goodbye Backpain designed for patients.

MP challenges the joints in various planes of motion to find "restricted or "stuck" joints in the locomotor system. When this joint is identified the chiropractor will use a quick shallow thrust (adjustment) to free up the "stuck" joint.

The analogy used by many MPI Docs is this: "If you were to fix a door that was not functioning properly, you would not just look at the closed door from the inside and out, but you would swing the door back and forth and determine where the hinge was not moving correctly." MP is taught by the Motion Palpation Institute (MPI). Dr. Mark King is currently the president and one of the lead instructors for the institute. They teach gentle and effective ways to find and biomechanically correct dysfunctions in the spine and extremities. The institute is considered by many to be the gold standard in the functional model paradigm shift.

This shift in the chiropractic paradigm to the functional model includes looking at various biomechanic faults through gait, squats, throwing and various others.

These faults are corrected with functional rehabilitation and are taught by some of the best manual therapists in the country. I would highly recommend any chiropractic student or Doc looking for another tool to throw in their toolbox to look into taking an MPI seminar. I would also recommend a chiropractic student to join their school's MPI club.
